Updates for The Falcon and the Winter Solider, Hawkeye

This weekend saw a couple of updates on Marvel’s Disney+ slate. First, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier won’t be making its intended August debut; TVLine has seen the list of August premieres for Disney’s streaming site, and the buddy superhero spy show isn’t on it. No announcement was made as to when it will be available. Elsewhere, in a Hollywood Reporter exclusive, the directing duo Amber Finlayson and Katie Ellwood – known as “Bert and Bertie” – will film “a block of episodes” for Hawkeye, as will Rhys Thomas. The three filmmakers have directed a bunch of things I’ve never seen, and mostly never heard of, but as The Hollywood Reporter points out, the Russo Brothers became a thing in much the same way. The report also confirms that Hawkeye will at least partly be about Clint Barton training the next version of his superhero persona, Kate Bishop, who may or may not be played by Hailee Steinfeld. No one knows when Hawkeye will air either.

A delay for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was expected; we’re still in the thick of lockdowns, and plenty of things further along than that have been pushed back. And I’m unfamiliar with any of the new Hawkeye directors, so the real news here is that the series is moving forward, despite some previous rumors that its status was up in the air. And that’s fine, I guess. I’m on the fence about these shows. I love the idea of Sam and Bucky teaming up for a spy mission; they’re in the classic buddy cop mold because they don’t particularly like each other, but they’re bound together by their mutual best friend. And I think a Disney+ show is the perfect way to keep Hawkeye in play; he’s not a strong enough lead for his own movie, but a stripped-down miniseries with nothing but Clint Barton and his arrows can work well. What gives me pause is my dislike for legacy heroes. I don’t want to see Sam Wilson or Bucky Barnes become Captain America, and I don’t want to watch someone else become Hawkeye. It has to matter who these heroes are; otherwise, the heroes themselves don’t matter, and neither do any of those who wear the mantle. If they got rid of the obnoxious legacy stuff and just put these guys on new adventures, I’d be completely on board. I’ll still watch, but with much trepidation. Now, I want some movement on Loki.

Are you bummed that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is being delayed? Do you know and/or like any of the Hawkeye directors? Will Clint Barton die as a hologram to make room for his successor? Let us know in the comments and stay tuned to Geeks + Gamers for more TV news!

So long as directors are being hired by merit and not as a check mark on the woke agenda, I’m willing to give them a chance. The series themselves…. I strongly suspect that they’ll be woke to some degree or another. I may be wrong, I’ll wait and see what people are saying (not the media sheep)

I don’t know enough about their work to guess. It’s a bummer that you have to wonder about these things now; it’s hard to get excited for almost anything. I try to keep hope alive, but even when something is going well, you can’t help but wait for the other shoe to drop.
