Viola Davis to Return to Suicide Squad

It looks like the Wall won’t be going anywhere. Deadline reports that How to Get Away With Murder star Viola Davis will reprise her role as ARGUS chief Amanda Waller in James Gunn’s revamp of the Suicide Squad, thus putting to rest some lingering questions fans had about whether this was simply a reboot. I was thrilled to hear this news. I feel that Viola Davis was one of the few choices aside from Margot Robbie, Will Smith, and Jai Courtney that the first film got right. The Suicide Squad is one of those properties that will never necessarily need to be rebooted; you can change the roster, with Waller being the one constant in all the Squad-centric movies, so the fact that she is officially back (especially when you consider that she had a three-picture deal to begin with) is exciting. Viola Davis is arguably one of the best performers working today, so if she decides to sign on to a major franchise for several movies, it would be hard to make a case for not using her, regardless of how the divisive the original Academy Award-winning film was.

The only question now is in what capacity other original members – such as Joel Kinnaman (amid conflicting reports) and Jai Courtney – will be joining the movie. Other than Robbie and Davis, I hadn’t expected any other characters from the original to show up. Even Deadshot will no longer be appearing in the film, everyone involved feeling it would be best to leave the role open for Smith should he return down the road. Aside from Viola Davis, the return I’m most excited about is Jai Courtney. His turn as Boomerang was, in my opinion, his best performance since his time on Spartacus.

Are you excited that Viola Davis and her fellow cast members are returning to Task Force X? Let us know in the comments!

I’m lukewarm on this after the fiasco of the first “Suicide Squad” film. The 1980’s Suicide Squad comics were awesome and Amanda Waller was a bad@ss in those stories. I hope the saga improves moving forward.
