Warner Bros. Dates Aquaman Sequel

DC and Warner Bros. are ready to dive back under the sea. Deadline has announced that the much-anticipated Aquaman sequel is set to be released on December 16, 2022, a surprising four years after the original. This release date makes sense, given that Disney has the next three Decembers booked and Warner Bros.’ unqualified success in 2018’s final month. However, I can’t help but wonder why they didn’t explore a possible October release date, as that had been when they planned to put out the first film until they vacated it and Venom took over.

Despite this long wait for the Aquaman sequel, I have a feeling part of this came down to giving Wan time to prepare, and perhaps to direct a smaller movie in-between. While he was not mentioned as a director in the article, I’m sure Warner Bros. is going to do everything they can to keep the in-demand director in the fold, even if it means a long wait. Sure, he’s going to be producing the upcoming Aquaman spinoff The Trench, but it’s in everyone’s best interest to get him back in the director’s chair. Now, with this release date, they have plenty of time to get things right for the Aquaman sequel. I’m also glad to see that the race with Marvel is finally over. Quality will ultimately win over quantity; this is something new DC head Walter Hamada seems to understand, and we can only hope this attitude continues when it comes to future DC films – yes, even The Batman. In the meantime, we can start up every fan’s favorite pastime: speculation. Where will Arthur go next? Will Orm help his brother battle the vengeful Black Manta? We’ll find out in 2022.
