What If…? Season 2 Trailer Brings the Multiverse Home for Christmas
Marvel’s got one last gasp for 2023. Today saw the release of the trailer for season 2 of What If…?, the animated Disney+ series about the MCU multiverse. There’s no official word on the episode titles yet, but it looks like we’ll be seeing a host of Marvel favorites in animated form, with Doctor Strange, Thor, Rocket Raccoon, Black Widow, Hank Pym, Black Panther, the Winter Soldier, Hela, Odin, and many others popping up in the trailer. What If…? season 2 will begin airing on December 22, 2023, with one episode arriving each day for nine days. You can see the trailer below:
They have to do this right at Christmas? I know Marvel is calling this a “gift,” but I really don’t feel like watching their content on Christmas Day. As for What If…?, I liked some episodes of the first season and hated others, so I’m anticipating another mixed bag at best. There appears to be an episode involving Shang-Chi’s family, which I’m expecting to be bored by. How fun this is will depend on the scenarios they think up; the more serious ones that explore the characters, their motivations, and what could have changed them are the better ones, but I don’t want to see another Frat Boy Thor cartoon. I also hope the animation is better because season 1 looked awful; it’s hard to believe a company with this much money behind it allowed the animation to look like it did. But, given what the special effects in their live-action content have become, I guess it shouldn’t be surprising. We’ve got a short Marvel break now that Loki is done, and The Marvels has come and gone, but there’s always something new lurking in the shadows, like Michael Myers after everyone thought they’d finally killed him.
(Funny story: I actually had an idea for something similar to this once; it would be an entire season of 24 that took place on Christmas Eve and into Christmas Day, with one episode airing every day starting on December 1, so the finale would be on Christmas Eve. I even thought up scenes and stuff. My mind wanders.)

I’m looking forward to more Captain Carter and seeing Happy Hogan go all John McClane in the Christmas episode. We will see how Gamora become the Thanos Killer from last season. I’m curious in seeing what happens when Hank and T’Chaka fight Peter Quill and the apparent finale with Strange Supreme and our original Marvel Native American character, Kahhori.
I’m very excited to see the 1602 episode and see the characters of that period. I’ve never read the comic on this but learned of it and I like those kinds of stories set in different timelines like Gotham by Gaslight or Red Son.
