This year marks the 25th anniversary of Transformers: Beast Wars – Which was actually my first exposure to the Transformers franchise proper: As a kid that was the right age at that time, I absolutely loved the series; the slapstick comedy and the many twists and turns in the story made it for one hell of a ride. I’d say the show’s aged rather well; the dialogue is hammy but it clearly revels in it, and the voice acting is excellent.

I was like nine or ten years old when I first saw this and didn’t even know about the original 80’s cartoon yet. This scene still fucking blew my mind.

And, of course, Dinobot. The most OG death in animation history:

“Tell me tale to those ask. Tell it truly: The ill deeds, along with the good, and let me be judged accordingly. The rest… is silence.”

There’s also the more controversial Beast Machines sequel show. Personally, I loved it, in spite of the inconsistencies and dramatic tonal shift next to its predecessor. It’s a bit unusual for a Transformers show, but I appreciated the darker, more spiritual tone with aspects of guerilla warfare. I got what they aiming for, and I enjoyed how the writers kept raising the stakes towards the end. Beast Wars Megatron was already insane, but in BM they cranked the gears up to 11 and made him one of the darkest villains you could get in a Saturday morning cartoon.

He went from a grandiose renegade to a genocidal fanatic. What wasn’t to like?

Still the best Megatron, even after all these years, IMO.
