Bradley Cooper Launches Production Label; Sets ‘Hyperion’ At Warner Bros With Graham King

EXCLUSIVE: Eight-time Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper is launching a new production banner, Deadline has learned. At the same time, Cooper and Weston Middleton at the new label are set to produce Hyperion based on the four-volume series of Dan Simmons novels, a project Cooper has had long in the works.

Hyperion now moves over from TV’s Syfy to Warner Bros. motion pictures with Oscar winner Graham King still attached to produce under his GK Films.

Previously conceived as a limited series for Syfy, Hyperion now will be adapted as feature by Tom Spezialy, the Emmy-winning EP of HBO’s limited series Watchmen. A search for a director is underway. The change-up in adapting the IP as a movie instead of a limited series is to provide the IP with more breadth and scope that the expansive story demands.

Published by Bantam Spectra, the Hyperion Cantos series includes Hyperion (1989), The Fall of Hyperion (1990), Endymion (1996) and The Rise of Endymion (1997). The books are set 700 years after the death of Old Earth, where the entire galaxy is at war. Seven strangers set forth on a journey to unlock the mysteries of the planet Hyperion’s Time Tombs — each convinced that they alone carry the key to saving humanity.

Executive producer Hayley King will oversee the project on behalf of GK films.

i’m still reading the 1st book at the moment. so far so good, great sci-fi story.

I hope they don’t make it woke.

Nice, Hazu. I have not read it yet.

May have spoke too soon. He suggests a show instead, which would make sense after Foundation. Some are wondering if this is the Dune effect. Is “Woke” the law now? Didn’t Blackrock say woke is mandatory, which means there is no longer freedom? I have not read Hyperion yet. Dune has generations of fans and history behind it. What is odd to me is that it almost seems like entertainment is following Quinn’s lead. His suggestions were simple and one at a time, so I actually have no problem with that at all. Guy is smart.

HYPERION IS BEING ADAPTED! Movie or TV Show?
    Quinn’s Ideas
Hyperion is being made into something… but hopefully a TV Show!

In the 29th century, the Hegemony of Man comprises hundreds of planets connected by farcaster portals. The Hegemony maintains an uneasy alliance with the TechnoCore, a civilisation of AIs. Modified humans known as Ousters live in space stations between stars and are engaged in conflict with the Hegemony.

Numerous “Outback” planets have no farcasters and cannot be accessed without incurring significant time dilation. One of these planets is Hyperion, home to structures known as the Time Tombs, which are moving backwards in time and guarded by a legendary creature known as the Shrike. On the eve of an Ouster invasion of Hyperion, a final pilgrimage to the Time Tombs has been organized. The pilgrims decide that they will each tell their tale of how they were chosen for the pilgrimage.

One person said to make it a horror. I like the terms “farcaster” “TechnoCore” and “Ousters.” I like A.I. as a topic and those movies have always worked my imagination. To talk to an entity that is not there, but is attuned to you.  Comments say that Foundation was clearly woke and I agree. I gave it a chance and it’s not for me, but it looks great.

Guy says he read the book and loves the story. The shrike is a scary monster. He says studios do not want to take a chance on anything that is not highly-commercialized. This is the exact opposite of what Geekin’ w/ James Hancock said, that anytime your movie is more of a brand than a story, you are in trouble. If studious are so risk averse, it’s actually cringe that they manage to mess up existing brands with woke garbage. The refuse to take risk and yet, they destroy the very brands they depend on to sell.

Part One, The Priest’s Tale: “The Man who Cried God”

Paul Duré and Lenar Hoyt are Catholic priests. Duré is exiled to Hyperion. He researches an isolated civilization known as the Bikura. Duré deduces that the Bikura have been infected with cross-shaped parasites called cruciforms. After death, the cruciform rebuilds the physical body and resurrects them. Duré encounters the Shrike and is infected with a cruciform.

Severe pain prevents Duré from either cutting out the cruciform or leaving the Bikura; his journal entries end. Hoyt reveals that Duré crucified himself to a tesla tree in a desperate attempt to rid himself of the cruciform. For seven years, Father Duré had been continually electrocuted and resurrected. As Hoyt touches Duré, the cruciform falls from his body and allows him finally to die. The Bikura are destroyed with nuclear weapons, but not before Hoyt is infected with both Duré’s cruciform and one of his own.

I like that they are Priests.  When Star Wars first started out, I really thought that the Jedi Knights were like holy men. I thought they were like guardian angels with light sabers that represented flaming swords.
