Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Trilogy May Be Dead

Rian Johnson’s next trip to a galaxy far, far away may, in fact, be canceled. On a recent episode of The John Campea Show, the titular pundit told his audience that, according to his sources, the recently announced Star Wars dates were for the David Benioff and D. B. Weiss series and not for the Rian Johnson trilogy; he had also been told that Johnson’s trilogy was off the table. While at first blush this announcement may seem suspect, the information is given more credence because his sources on this were the same ones who told him Ben Affleck was out as Batman, which was eventually proven to be true.

Should this cancellation come to pass, I have to say, I’m a little disappointed. While I wasn’t thrilled with Rian Johnson’s take on the Skywalker saga, there’s no denying the divisive director had a vision. In fact, his was a vision that I wanted to see applied to the broader Star Wars universe. It felt as though the proverbial handcuffs were going to be taken off for this trilogy, so the idea that we will not see what Johnson can really do with this mythology feels like a missed opportunity, especially when you consider that there was a good chance we were going to get to see Joseph Gordon Levitt (who’s had a role in every one of Johnson’s films to varying degrees, including a voice cameo in The Last Jedi) in the fmovie. All that being said, it’s important to reiterate that this is a rumor for now, and frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised if we got denials for the next year in much the same way we did with Affleck’s Batman exit. I can’t help hoping that we’ll get to see Johnson’s work on this trilogy in some form, perhaps in prose, given the fact that he worked in a novella format during the development of his debut feature Brick.
