Gaming genre forums instead of platforum forums (or both)

Right now, if you want to talk about a game, and that game is available on multiple platforms, you either have to make several topics or just live with some people not seeing your topic as it isn’t in “their” platform.

    Both options suck.

IMO forums should be about genres instead. A forum for RPGs, strategy games, simulation, indies, etc. whatever granularity you wish for ;)
In addition, there could still be platform-specific forums to talk about platform-specific hardware and peripherals.

Or maybe one such “Hardware” forum where people can tag their topics as PC/PS4/etc. in addition to genre-specific forums for gaming.

Id love a RPG forum. They are the greatest genera of games.

I disagree with Genre Forums, 1st off there are way too many genres and second it will start many arguments why or why not a game should or shouldn’t be posted in a certain genre forum, mainly RPG because a lot of modern games have RPG elements, and on the other site there are people saying that JRPGs aren’t RPGs.

Insted I think we should keep the current Platform Forums and add a General Gaming Forum for everything multiplat and what else doesn’t fit in the Platform sections.

      I agree with this

I don’t see the problem here. Admins decide what genres they want to have, you could easily get away with 4-6 categories (so not more than we have platforms right now). And likewise, they (and mods) decide what game should be in what genre.
Besides, the genre discussion itself is part of discussing a game. On the specific example of JRPGs, JRPGs are a subset of RPGs and thus belong in the RPG section.
Tons of communities manage this just fine, I don’t see why this one would be different.
This is, however, the only forum I’ve ever seen that splits gaming discussion into platforms. Which has all the disadvantages I posted without any advantages.

There are way more cross-platform than single-platform games, though. A few exclusives here and there that could be put into their respective platform forums, but the majority of games, even the majority of AAA games is not bound to a single platform. I guess only Nintento is a bigger exception here.
If there was a single cross-platform forum, there would be so many topics in it, it would become impossible to browse.

Besides, I honestly don’t know anyone who plays games because of the platform they are on (beyond owning that platform). People play games because of their interest in the genre.
I’m not interested in every genre on PC, just because I play on PC. Therefore, the vast majority of PC-games-specific dicussions would be of no interest to me and I’d have to wade through tons of topics I don’t care about.
That’s not exactly a good way to structure things, a forum should be structured so that people can find topics they are interested in as fast as possible.

(I tried replying to your post, but the forum keeps deleting my replies, only this one is visible at least to me)

        I also agree with this – a Multi-Platform forum.

I have been in several forums in the last 2 decades and most of them had a general gaming and system specific sections and that worked just fine, also you can mark topics as your favorite or subscribe to them.

Now the best way would be if we could link a topic to several sections at once, like when making a thread about Xenoblade you could select that it shows up in the Nintendo section and RPG section (if we had genre sections), but I don’t think that’s possible.

Also even with genre forums we can’t remove the system forums because you won’t have a place to discuss the system itself, unless we had a Hardware Forum.

I’m not interested in every genre on PC, just because I play on PC

And I’m not interested in every RPG but mainly JRPGs on Switch and PC if no Switch version exists, as I am indeed boycotting Sony and Xbox in the future and only gonna clear up my PS4 backlog and don’t go to the PS4 and Xbox sections except to bash Last of Us 2 or so.

I think there should be a general gaming forum where people can discuss gaming topics that don’t necessarily only fall in a gaming specific forum.

          #166962

Id be fine with that. I just want a place I can talk about mini painting.

Hello TheSHEEP, thank you for the forum topic. I am in agreement with you that gaming genre forums should be in the gaming tab instead of just Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, Retro, and PC hubs. I started a forum suggestion on here about having a cross platform hub but a genre hub would be even better.

That would indeed be quite amazing, but I haven’t seen a forum framework that does this out of the box.

Also even with genre forums we can’t remove the system forums because you won’t have a place to discuss the system itself, unless we had a Hardware Forum.

I suggested as much, a Hardware forum would make a lot of sense. I don’t personally care if it was one hardware forum or split between platforms.

And I’m not interested in every RPG but mainly JRPGs on Switch and PC if no Switch version exists

So you could just post in the RPG forum, where there would be a lot less other posts than in a PC or Switch/Nintendo forum.
If you were posting in the PC or Nintendo forum, you’d only get a fraction of players for the game instead of all players of the game. Generally, differences between platform-versions of a game are negligible when talking about it.

That’s the one big problem of talking about games inside a single-platforum subforum: You split the playerbase for no real reason.
