I lived on an estate on the East side of England from being born.

All I knew and loved, apart from football, was Star Wars.

We didn’t get to go to cinema, but rented the videos from the video van that came round to our square once a week.

Star Wars was around the time of The A Team, Knight Rider and Airwolf. But Star Wars trumped them all.

Still love the original trilogy today. Don’t like the prequels and hate the sequels. But back in the days of Return of the Jedi and getting a few figures and toys for Christmas… well, I feel nostalgic for it.

At the time, Star Wars meant everything. It was my life. My first digital watch had R2 and Threepio on it. The memory of staring at it in school assembly when I was 5 years old is still there.

When Star Wars was released in the US, a trickle of photos and articles came over to us in the UK. Scenes were shown on television.

It’s crazy to think that we in the UK had to wait until December 1977 for the film to have it’s premier in London. It was not until the start of 1978 that the film started to go on general release. I started to collect the articles and photos even before the film came out.

When the film cam out I saw it multiple times. In those days films used to disappear for a while and then come back for school holidays. I saw all the original trilogy at the cinema and also in the double and triple bill showings.

Everything from those times I still have. Figures, books, posters,soundtracks,magazines etc..

My Star Wars is the original trilogy in the theatrical versions. These theatrical cuts are the only versions I watch. It’s heartbreaking to see these theatrical cuts now being wiped out of history.

I remember seeing A New Hope for the first time at the cinema in 1978, and being completely blown away. There was nothing like it – truly groundbreaking. My everlasting memory of it is the Cantina scene with the band and Han Solo/Greedo. All the other girls fancied Mark Hamill and wanted to be Leia, but I had a yearning for blasters and light sabers! Sadly I never had any memorabilia, having to make do with free transfers in cereal packets that you rubbed on to the scene on the back of the box.

Good lad, but lets do an age check ….. do you remember having to wait until xmas time to see them on TV? circling Star Wars (and Indiana Jones, Bond movies etc) in the Radio Times?

Oh yes! I remember having the TV Times with the Star Wars cover. Still got it.

Good times lying in front of the TV ready to cut the adverts out!
