This series seems to have gained popularity recently. There’s even an anime for it coming out soon. I started reading it a few months ago.
To try to summarize the story without spoiling anything: An elven woman joins a small group of adventurers for a ten-year journey to defeat a big evil ruler. After the adventure ends, they all end up going their own way. When she meets up with her companions again after 50 years, they’ve all aged a lot, except for her. When her companions start to die, she decides to try to grow closer to humans and try to understand them better.
I’ve enjoyed this series quite a bit. There is a good bit of humor, and some action and adventure elements scattered along the way, but especially early on there is a sense of melancholia, as Frieren revisits places from her earlier adventures. It doesn’t wallow in nostalgia or any other negative emotions, but it does play at times of the loneliness of someone like an elf who can live for many, many times longer than any of the other people around her.
I recommend this one.
This trailer is for the anime, coming later this year.
