Katy Perry ‘sells music catalogue for eye-watering $225,000,000’

(38-year-old) Katy Perry has sold the rights to her music – and some of her biggest hits – in a deal worth $225million, it has been claimed.

    WOW!

    What does this cover?

…a deal for the sale of five albums to Litmus Music.

That is $45 Million per album.

How will they recover their investment?

…the company now owns her stake in the master recordings and publishing for her releases from 2008 to 2020, and will collect royalties on her music in the future.

Royalties on the music that are sold (physical or digital), commercializing it (licenses for ads/etc to use it to sell their product/services).  But does this deal also cover live performances by Perry?

Katy has taken a step back from the studio in recent years, instead focusing on raising daughter Daisy with fiancé Orlando Bloom.

It does not sound like she plans on returning to the studio or go back on tour any time soon.

And why would she?  With $225 Million added to her bank account.

It sort of makes sense.  She could get royalties forever but her music is not exactly timeless classics.  It’s churned out of a machine pop and the longer she gets from the time she created it the less relevant it’s going to be and that profit will slide off quick.  I think cashing it now is probably a wise move.

      Good for her.

As for the management of Litmus Music — what the hell were they smoking?

Not the first time she’s had a go at a company; she had a right go at EA 10 years ago for not giving her her half of the money that she earned for the ‘Sims 3’ ‘Katy Perry: Sweet Treats’ pack which is now sadly no longer available as a result. Although there is a mod that lets you have what was originally in that pack for the ‘Sims 4’ which I’ve got😅. It was also the first mod that I got for the ‘Sims 4’😂.

This is an interesting video on the death and re-invention of the music industry. The long and short of it is that for most the streaming model has made singing an unsustainable career path. In such a highly competitive industry a new artist might get one or two chart topping hits from his platform then be forgotten. Neither is it any longer profitable to create albums because they’re just not selling. Established artists have seen the writing on the wall and are cashing out before things get worse.

Justin Bieber, Whitney Houston’s Estate and even classic bands like Air Supply have embraced this new paradigm. Depending on the deal the new owners can basically do anything they want – create new music, product insertions and in the case of Whitney Houston – put out new documentaries and send her on tour as a hologram.

I suppose the older artists view it as a way make money while living on forever. But if these companies have free reign, artists shouldn’t have any complaints if/when their works are used in an unsavory manner.
