    The new season for the NHL has been going strong.

    I still think points for standings should be adjusted, to reflect the differences between:

    1. Regulation Win = 5 pts (instead of 2 points)
    2. Overtime Win    = 4 points (instead of 2 points)
    3. Shootout Win    = 3 points (instead of 2 points)
    4. Shootout Loss    = 2 points (instead of 1 point)
    5. Overtime Lose   = 1 point (currently is 1 point)
    6. Regulation Loss = 0 points (currently is 0 points)

    This makes winning as soon as possible worth more points.

    This makes winning in regulation all that more valuable.  And makes every point matter even more.

    I like this more than the other option people have been asking for;

    1. Regulation Win = 3 pts
    2. Extra Time Win = 2 pts (be it via overtime or shootout)
    3. Extra Time Loss = 1 pt (be it via overtime or shootout)
    4. Regulation Loss = 0 pts.

    As one who dislike the SO, I don’t like giving it the same weight as one would get via OT win.

    What do you think?

    I’ll post later what the standing are using my method, both when each team has played 5 games, 10 games, etc, and what it would be on this day.

    I’m just surprised at how some teams are doing at this point of the season after the first third is essentially done. The Rangers are currently first in their division – which I am ecstatic about, but don’t expect it to end up that way at the end- and the islanders are in last, which even with the covid and injury issues is the most surprising thing this season. Hopefully this season continues to be interesting and we get some exciting playoff matchups.
