“Whatever the meaning of the term ‘plantations’ in the context of Rhode Island’s history, it carries a horrific connotation when considering the tragic and racist history of our nation,” Metts said in a statement to the Providence Journal.
In other words: the name was not in any relation to slavery, but because it’s 2020 the name must be changed anyhow!
On one hand it changes nothing because nobody here calls it The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. In fact I’d guess over half of Rhode Islanders don’t even know the full name exists. From a practical standpoint I would say shorten the name to just Rhode Island and make it official, but on the other hand I am tired of people bending the knee to these outrage peddlers and now want to keep the long name out of spite.
