Skyrim, modding and Elder Scrolls

Anyone still playing Skyrim or any of the other Elder Scrolls titles currently?

I was playing Skyrim on X1 some months ago, got tired of limited options for a modded playthrough, and finally started playing on PC (both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions, because I’m lazy and can’t be bothered learning how to port mods).

I lean more towards vanilla-enhancing/lore-enhancing mods which don’t change the game too drastically, but it’s amazing how that alone can still add a lot of replay value to a game that’s almost nine years old, when at this point, most players will have likely exhausted everything vanilla Skyrim has to offer, several times over. I’m pretty into ES lore, though, so I guess that’s what keeps me invested in the game, in spite of its faults.

Speaking of, I guess most folks here are pretty disillusioned with the current state of Bethesda? I admit to not playing any of their games since Skyrim, but the news I’ve heard doesn’t sound particularly good at all.

I was doing some modding with Skyrim about a year ago. I used various visual upgrades, housing, and some other minor gameplay enhancement mods. I was also trying to use an ENB, but I was on a 960 2 GB. I have since built a new rig and got a 2060. I may go back and mod the game again though since I have a 2060 non super now.

I played Skyrim from beginning to end without mods. Then I played with mods and I don’t think that I would ever play Skyrim again without mods.

The mods show just how MUCH content is missing from Skyrim. The next Elder Scrolls MUST be better, but the possibilities are very low right now.

I’m really hoping ESVI will be good, but Bethesda’s current trends don’t fill me with much hope. Instead of improving Morrowind and Oblivion’s RPG mechanics, they scrapped it in favor of something so streamlined I’m not really sure you could call it an RPG. The setting could have two provinces instead of one, and it’d still be devoid of meaningful content. Then there’s the writing. Elder Scrolls has some amazing world-building, but it hasn’t been utilized very well since Morrowind’s Main Quest and Oblivion’s faction questlines. I admit to playing ESO now and then, and some of the DLC storylines are actually quite good (Orsinium and Clockwork City come to mind). But that’s by a different team all-together and not an indicator of the future of the main series.

The way things are going ESVI may very well make or break Bethesda.

Sofia, and Macho Man dragons are the only mods anyone really needs.

Maybe I’m weird but I prefer Oblivion over Skyrim. I love mods so much, every day on Nexus I look for mods for this and many other games.

Oblivion is definitely the superior game :D

I replayed Oblivion about a year ago using Bevilex’ mod guide, and it was just as great as I remember.  I’ve been thinking about going back and replaying Skyrim using one of the modlists on the Wabbajack website soon.

Speaking on your last point, yeah, Bethesda has mad a lot of oopsies lately.  While I could care less for Fallout76 and their other oopsies, it makes me very concerned for TES 6.

I think what helps ES as a series is that every game is a bit different, both mechanically and in art direction. Oblivion just has this charm to it which the other games don’t have (even Morrowind, and I think that’s a diamond in the rough). Hopefully ESVI will still bring something new to the table and won’t just be “Skyrim 2.”

For Oldrim I found Falmeroon (it’s not available on Nexus, I’m afraid), which adds Ancient Snow Elf ruins across the Skyrim overworld. Most are small and are unmarked, but there are few dungeons with unique loot (such as Amulets of Auriel). If you enjoyed Dawnguard and wanted more Snow Elf lore, this is a good choice to download.

On SE, I’ve been trying out Beyond Reach, which adds the Western Reach (eastern High Rock) as a new world space. It’s currently still a work-in-progress and it shows, but it’s damned impressive. It takes a more “dark fantasy” approach compared to the series canon, though I’m down with it: It captures the more unsavory parts of medieval Celtic society.

I’ve usually played Skyrim as male characters on consoles, so I’ve taken the opportunity to make female characters for a change, using the CBBE mod. I think we all know how Skyrim modders love their big tiddies, but CBBE is a simple vanilla body-enhancer which makes female characters just generally more attractive, with smoother skin and more clear complexions. I won’t post a link to the mod itself as it’s 18+ (and I’m not sure how the moderators here feel about that), but here are my new characters on both classic and SE.

I might post more if the discussion keeps going.

I used Tempered Skins both male and female for the characters to improve appearance, the female uses the UNP female standard instead of the CBBE. I also used Shiva’s Beautiful Presets Lore Friendly Apachii Hair to change the appearance of all the NPCs characters. I have a folder with all the mods I was using when I was modding the game. I did have more screenshots, but I have lost them due to building a new rig. Yet, I have some still from my steam captures. Here goes the difference in Danica Pure Spring.

I have done a ton of Morrowind modding.  I still play MW, OB & Skyrim.

in 2020 I still think Morrowind is the best Elders Scrolls, especially modded up

Modded Oblivion is very good,  Vanilla Oblivion is garbage

Vanilla Skyrim is fun but kind of soulless & bland. Modded up it is pretty decent.

I need to reinstall Skyrim and some of the mods I used with it. Havent played that in 18 months or more.

I just wish the graphics card in my tower was better. Its just not a gaming PC.

      What do  you have?

Off the shelf 2017 lenovo tower. Prior to getting it for xmass that year Id never heard of them.

I really should find the time to play Morrowind again. Tamriel Rebuilt seems to be coming along nicely and looks lit. It’ll probably be amazing when it’s fully done.

As far immersion mods go I really recommend PC Head Tracking and Voice Type. This brings something back from Oblivion by making your character look at actors within the game world and even change facial expressions when looking at NPC’s (depending on the NPC’s disposition towards the player) instead of just staring blankly ahead and even allows for custom types (obviously not compatible with Shouts unless they’ve already been recorded for. But if you don’t want to role-play as the Dragonborn and are avoiding the Main Quest then this is hardly an issue). I believe there are similar mods out there, but this neatly rolls everything into one package.

Lawbringer is pretty good convenience mod, allowing you to claim a few (but not all) Bandit forts for friendly factions. I personally found it annoying how some camps would eventually repopulate after roughly two in-game weeks. Hopefully the author might include more locations that are on or close to main roads in future updates.
