Sports World Reacts To WNBA Salary Suggestion

Do WNBA players deserve higher salaries?

    NO!

There’s been a lot of talk about raising the salaries of WNBA players, especially following the Brittney Griner situation in Russia. Griner, like many of her colleagues, played overseas to make more money in the offseason.

In the early days of pro-sports leagues, the players WORKED other jobs.  It is part of growing the league/sport.

“FYI this league LOSES money. The players don’t deserve more, they actually deserve less from an economic standpoint. The games only average 5,600 paid (not actual seats filled) attendance. It’s fine to supplement the league if the owners want to but don’t say it’s DESERVED…” one fan added.

    I agree!

“The NBA brings in $7.4 billion/year The WNBA brings in $60 million/year Only way they gonna make more is if WNBA can actually bring in money,” one fan added.

So the WNBA brings in 0.8% that the NBA does (even with NBA subsidies).

According to google, the average NBA salary in 2021 was $8.5 Million.  (0.11486% of revenue per player.)

According to google, the average WNBA salary in 2022 was $102,751 (0.17125% of revenue per player.)

So they are on average getting a bigger share of revenue that the NBA player does… and they think they “DESERVE” more?

Should WNBA players make higher salaries?

Without them doing MORE to attract fans, improve the game, increase merchandise sales, etc…. HELL NO!

They are already overpaid for what they are producing.  At 0.11486% of revenue per player, the wnba player on average should only be getting $70K.

If the WNBA only brings in 0.8% of the revenue, then their salaries should be:

Let’s them raise it. It will probably bankrupt the whole thing.  It will essentially eat itself alive.

We all know where this is heading.

The NBA will probably end up subsidizing the WNBA as is being done with US Soccer.

What makes this year’s tournament unique for the U.S. players is an agreement in May that has the U.S. Women’s National Soccer team get equal payouts as the men, despite not playing in the tournament, according to ESPN.

The $380,0000 is triple what the women made from the 2019 Women’s World Cup, a tournament won by Team USA and marked its fourth title in eight total World Cups. Women on that team earned a $110,000 bonus for winning the tournament.

Women on the roster for the 2023 Women’s World Cup for Team USA will get the same amount earned by the men in the 2022 World Cup.

The agreement reached earlier this year has 90% of the World Cup prize money pooled and shared equally.

“NBA salary in 2021 was $8.5 Million”

I am curious who thinks ANYONE deserves money like that for throwing a ball around?

I say Lower the pay of the NBA. Imo they don’t deserve that, no one does.

It’s not a matter of deserve.  It’s a matter of supply and demand.  Lots of folks love to see rare elite athletes play basketball.  Same thing as the NFL.  Because there is a market for it and big money is involved this is where it lands.  I can see an argument where they should make considerably more given how much they bring in and how they essentially sacrifice their bodies for the sport combined with the rare physical talents they have.

This is ironically the same argument for why the WNBA should not make equal money to the NBA.  They don’t generate but a fraction of the revenue.  The demand is not nearly as high.
