Blu-ray/DVD sales prop up the anime industry in Japan as far as I know. I buy plenty of anime blu-rays but a lot are published by Funimation so the anime companies probably see less of my money because of that. There’s other US publishers like Viz Media and Sentai Filmworks that sell physical media as well but Funimation houses all the classics and mainstream titles under their umbrella. It sucks because you pretty much have to give Sony money if you want physical media, and even though Funimation isn’t the only game in town, like I said, they got the elite library in anime, so they’re attracting the biggest audience who are looking for physical media. I know most people are like “but you can stream all the anime you want on CR/Funimation” but keep in mind that Sony is on a censoring binge and this includes Funimation. Physical media isn’t going to get altered in content sitting in my shelf.
