“Outrage Culture” as we know it has always kinda been around for the last few decades, it’s just that social media has amplified their voices and given them power they didn’t have before.
People in the West are incredibly altruistic and self-sacrificing: We don’t care what we to do ourselves, but the moment some perceived injustice happens to a seeming underprivileged “outer” group, we lose our collective shit and do everything to fix it, even it comes at our detriment. We’re a highly moral and responsible people when it comes to others: We just don’t have any sense of morals or responsibility towards ourselves.
I think it’s a symptom of cultural malaise. People generally need some kind of greater purpose in life, something larger than themselves. But the West doesn’t really offer anything of the sort, it’s incredibly hyper-individualistic and some people can’t cope with that. They need to feel like they’re part of a group that’s working towards some larger goal, to elevate their own sense of self-worth. A lot of these “social justice” causes bear a lot in common with religion, only replacing God with government, as though government policy will just fix everything.
