Agatha Christie’s iconic detective Hercule Poirot is back on the case as the first trailer for Death on the Nile has arrived online. As with 2918’s Murder on the Orient Express, the film is directed by Kenneth Branagh, who also produces and plays Poirot, and costars Gal Gadot and Armie Hammer, among many others. Check out the Death on the Nile trailer below:
While this may seem strange, I love the fact that the Death on the Nile trailer is reminiscent in tone and style of this film’s predecessor while also leaving the impression that this mystery will challenge Poirot in a new way. Back when my favorite Guy Ritchie film, Sherlock Holmes, was released, one of the big complaints I heard from various detractors was that Holmes wasn’t challenged. To an extent, I suppose Murder on the Orient Express presented a similar problem, so I’m glad that this formula seems to be in play for Poirot. Much of the audience didn’t have a frame of reference for the character – save for perhaps David Suchet’s iteration in certain circles – so I’ve always felt it was a smart idea to showcase the detective at his best in the first film and then give him a far greater challenge in the follow-up. The first installment was a modest hit for Fox, so it’s good to see that Disney is sticking with the franchise rather than burying it, writing it off as merely another leftover franchise initiated during the Fox era. This is especially important since Branagh has already given the folks at Disney a bonafide hit a few years ago with Cinderella (let’s just forget that Artemis Fowl ever existed). I can’t wait to see where Poirot goes next when Death on the Nile opens in October.

As a big Agatha Christie fan, I’m looking forward to seeing this, though David Suchet will always be quintessential Poirot
