Javicia Leslie is the New Batwoman

The new Scarlet Knight has officially been cast. Variety reports that God Friended Me’s Javicia Leslie has been cast in the role of Ryan Wilder for season 2 of Batwoman. Social media and various news outlets have been abuzz with the news, including original star Ruby Rose, who has given her the thumbs up, officially passing the torch to Leslie. Season 2 of the show will debut in January 2021.
From what I’ve seen of her acting chops on the Greg Berlanti-produced God Friended Me, I’d say that Javicia Leslie is a good choice for the role. Looking back on those audition sides I read about a while back, I can totally picture her as Ryan Wilder. While I had all but assumed that Vanessa Morgan would get the role due to her affiliation with the CW network, but Leslie’s casting very much serves the same purpose, since this continues her association with the prolific Berlanti. Given the fact that she has little in the way of high-profile roles, they’ll be able to build out Ryan’s character without any previous baggage. This may be a long shot, but perhaps we’ll get to see Leslie’s God Friended Me co-star Violett Beane back in the Arrowverse for a Batwoman crossover. It’s always fun to see actors who were on one show appear on another in a completely different genre (such as Glee’s Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist). Overall, this seems to be a solid choice, and I’m excited to see what Javicia Leslie will do with the role, especially with “Bruce Wayne” back in Gotham thanks to Alice’s machinations, and Batwoman’s team- up with the Man of Steel for a crossover next spring.
