I got my signed copy (it’s the cover with Isom and Yaira) a couple of weeks ago, but also didn’t want to open it, so I just ordered a regular copy of the book, there was only one cover left. Got that and read it yesterday.
It’s a good origin, it’s not really long enough to go very deep into character and history of anyone, just hints at things. The dialogue is a little awkward in places, some words I wouldn’t use here and there, but that’s probably my only criticism. I like what it’s setting up, and I’m really looking forward to following this universe as it expands. Happy to have gotten in on the ground floor!
Finally got a chance to peruse this and the quality is definitely there. You see the artwork is much better than the competition. I think where it could really excel is in dialogue. Like real urban writing just because there has been so much quality lingo, hiphop, comedy and sports trash talk over the years that there must be so many lines to draw from. Peter Parker was always know for his jokes during fights, but I would think that top ballers and top boxers would have been way more funny and engaging, as well as hack from like Black Twitter or other places like WSHH. I’d love compilations of great lines and dialogue from those sources. There’s nothing like the trash they talk.
I saw the comic they tried to compare Isom to and Isom’s art was way better. I also like Eric’s motivational panels that say things like We Will Win and stuff like that. Like a top coach, which is another thing that is needed today is motivation that you would get from a top guy like a Doc Rivers or someone like that. Maybe July could even talk to top coaches and kind of get their speeches and stuff to get hyped. Would be so good in a comic book. I think the readers would appreciate all that in literary form.
