Trailer for The Royal Hotel Promises a Scary Walkabout

The dangers of the Land Down Under are coming to theaters as NEON has released a trailer for the upcoming thriller The Royal Hotel. Based on actual events, the film finds American best friends Hanna and Liv taking jobs as live-in bartenders in a desolate Australian town where the boorish locals’ harassment of the girls escalates into violence and terror. Julia Garner and Jessica Henwick star in the film, with the great Hugo Weaving, Toby Wallace, Ursula Yovich, and Daniel Henshall in supporting roles. Directed by Kitty Green, The Royal Hotel had its world premiere several days ago at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado, and screened again today at the Toronto International Film Festival. NEON will distribute the film in America, while HanWay and Cross City Films will distribute it internationally, and Transmission Films will release it in Australia. It will be released in the US and Australia on October 6, 2023. You can see the trailer for The Royal Hotel below:

I’m interested. In recent years, it’s felt to me like the thriller is all but dead, with the rare instances of the genre coming from foreign markets. (There’s a great Irish thriller from a few years ago called Calibre on Netflix; it’s nothing like you think it’ll be.) So, when one pops up, it immediately lands on my radar once I hear about it. I’ve only seen Julia Garner in Ozark, and while I didn’t care for the show (the first season – the only one I watched – felt like a poor man’s Breaking Bad that didn’t understand why that show was so amazing), but she was good. Jessica Henwick was the best part about mega-lame Iron Fist, so much so that they tried to make her the new hero of the show (which was a mistake), and Hugo Weaving speaks for himself. I’m looking forward to checking this out, and I’m glad it’s not just landing on a streaming service.
