Tron 3 Is Coming; Jared Leto, Joachim Rønning Attached

According to a Deadline exclusive, Disney is officially working on another installment in the Tron film franchise. The first Tron was among a wave of Disney sci-fi films trying to capitalize on the popularity of Star Wars. Tron: Legacy was released in an attempt to monetize the original film’s cult status and was followed by the short-lived but excellent animated series Tron: Uprising. Joachim Rønning is in talks to direct the third film, with Jared Leto starring. Rønning previously directed Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

I can’t help but be a little excited for this. I’m not the world’s biggest Tron fan, but I’ve at least liked everything I’ve seen from the franchise. It seems counterintuitive for Disney to further invest in a series that continually underperforms financially, but it’s also encouraging in a way. Maybe someone in that company (though clearly not everyone) actually values their fans and what they want, not just cold hard cash. Not that I’m counting on that becoming a norm over there; it is a business.
