Benioff and Weiss Exit Star Wars

David Benioff and DB Weiss have announced in a joint statement with Kathleen Kennedy that they will no longer be working on their Star Wars trilogy. The first film was initially set to hit theatres in December of 2022. The reason given, of course, was the dreaded scheduling conflicts. Usually, that excuse comes off as little more than lip service. However, in this case, it actually makes sense in the context of their Netflix deal. There had been rumors that the duo was at least going to write a treatment for the first film. As such, it’s quite disappointing that they are leaving the franchise altogether.

Benioff and Weiss out of Star Wars

Yes, the final season of Game of Thrones was a bit lackluster, but I had a lot of faith they would give us something special, that they would extend George Lucas’ universe in new and exciting ways. For so long, it seemed as though we at least had some vague idea of what the next chapter of big-screen Star Wars would be. So to have everything up in the air again is a bit disconcerting, especially in light of Rian Johnson’s inconsistent comments regarding his trilogy. However, with The Mandalorian debuting in a few weeks, Obi-Wan and Cassian Andor series on the way, and Kevin Feige’s Star Wars movie in the works, there’ll be no shortage of Star Wars content in the next few years. Here’s hoping they’ll fast track the latter, and we’ll see next cinematic Star Wars (beyond The Rise of Skywalker) before too long.

Are you glad Benioff and Weiss have exited the franchise, or do you think they deserved a chance to put their stamp on George Lucas’ galactic opus? Do you think we’ll still get a new Star Wars film in 2022? Let us know in the comments and stay tuned to Geeks + Gamers for more movie news!
