Clint Eastwood Will Direct and Star in No Macho

The Man with No Name is saddling up once again. Deadline exclusively reports that Clint Eastwood will star in and direct a film adaptation of No Macho for Warner Bros. Based on the novel by N. Richard Nash – who co-wrote the screenplay with Nick Schenk – No Macho is about a former rodeo star and horse breeder who agrees to rescue his former boss’ son from his mother, and teaches the boy how to be a man on the way back. No one else has been cast yet, and while there is no production start date or even a studio greenlight, Eastwood is already scouting locations (and I wouldn’t want to be the studio suit who tries to tell Clint “No”). Eastwood’s last film, both as director and star, was 2018’s The Mule.

I know this sentiment feels like a cliché at this point, but any time Clint Eastwood decides to act in a movie, it’s an event. He’s at the age (90!) where each performance feels like it could be his last; he doesn’t act much anymore, and he’s very picky about the parts he chooses. That means he sees something in No Macho, and from the description of the movie Deadline gives, it’s understandable why he does. That role sounds perfect for Eastwood, a man’s man of the sort we rarely see anymore, and I can imagine him using this movie as an outlet for his criticisms with the state of masculinity in the modern era. I don’t imagine it will take long for him to put his cast together, and it’ll probably take even less time for him to shoot it. With a couple of script tweaks, this could even be a sequel to Bronco Billy, where he played a rodeo star in a traveling circus; it’s even thematically similar, with Eastwood as an aging cowboy trying to impart wisdom and manliness to the youth. I don’t think that will happen, but it’s neat to think about it. (People love to point out that his Hogan in Two Mules for Sister Sara – which you should see if you haven’t – could easily be the Man with No Name.) 2020 has been a hell of a year for everyone, and the thought of seeing Clint Eastwood on the screen again is as heartwarming a piece of hope as I can imagine.

Are you looking forward to seeing Clint Eastwood in front of the camera again? Have you read No Macho? Will we still be saying, “This could be Eastwood’s last film” when he’s 120, God willing? Let us know in the comments and stay tuned to Geeks + Gamers for more movie news!
