Denis Villeneuve isn’t done playing in the sands of Arrakis yet. While talking with Empire about his upcoming sequel/second half of his literary adaptation, Dune: Part Two, Villeneuve revealed that he’d like to make a third film in the Dune universe, this one based on the second book in Frank Herbert’s epic sci-fi series, Dune Messiah. When asked about another foray into Paul Atreides’ world, Villeneuve said this to Empire:
“If I succeed in making a trilogy, that would be the dream… Dune Messiah was written in reaction to the fact that people perceived Paul Atreides as a hero… Which is not what he wanted to do. My adaptation [of Dune] is closer to his idea that it’s actually a warning.”
Villeneuve confirms that a Dune Messiah adaptation would be his last film in the series, saying of the subsequent novels, “After that the books become more… esoteric.” And while another movie is dependent on the success of Dune: Part Two – which has just been delayed till next year because Zendaya has a lot of Instagram followers (I’m not joking) – Villeneuve is thinking positive, revealing, “I will say, there are words on paper.”
As with most films that lend themselves to sequels, as long as the quality can be maintained, I’d love for another Dune movie. I know there are a bunch of books – ComicBookGirl is a huge Dune fan and has a series of playlists called “Dune Book Club” where she examines them in detail – so I don’t want Villeneuve to reach a certain point in the story and leave us hanging, but if he can complete a satisfying science fiction tale, I hope they give him as many movies as he wants.

I maintain that I think it was a mistake not to start with God Emperor of Dune. Lead with your biggest, most imposing statement. With today’s FX and tech, seeing God Emperor of Dune, the worm king on screen would have made an impact and the timing was almost perfect back then.
It would have been more interesting to cover later novels of DUNE. I am grateful for his efforts, but am not really into the product like I thought I’d be. The comics are pretty good and I am one who actually like Brian and Kevin’s books, in addition to Frank’s.
It looks like Sisterhood of DUNE is not happening, which is too bad. They should have just recruited the teams from Warrior Nun and Motherland: Fort Salem.
