Final Dune: Part Two Trailer Keeps its Beauty in Check

We’ll have to wait till after Christmas to get a taste of spice. Warner Bros. has released a third – and, presumably, final – trailer for Dune: Part Two. The second half of the epic sci-fi adaptation from Denis Villeneuve, Dune: Part Two finds Paul Atreides seeking revenge against the Harkonnen house as he navigates prophetic dreams he’s having concerning Arrakis’ future. Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Javier Bardem, and Stellan Skarsgård return from Dune, with Florence Pugh, Léa Seydoux, Austin Butler, and Christopher Walken joining them. Originally set to hit theaters a month ago, Dune: Part Two has been pushed back to March 1, 2024. You can see the new trailer below:

I continue to like what I see from this movie, but after the first one, that’s to be expected. There’s a lot of new footage in the final Dune: Part Two trailer, but they manage not to give much away as they share more of the film, which is impressive. We know pretty much what we already did: Paul is having dreams and may be a prophet; he and his allies are fighting the rival family who destroyed House Atreides; the Emperor is involved; Paul is faltering in his noble quest, perhaps believing his own hype as a prophet too much; there are sandworms. Actually, we know that the good guys will have to face three sandworms at once in what looks like it’ll be a terrific sequence. A lot of the shots in the trailer are magnificent, and something I love about them is how they do these spectacular things in the background, keeping the focus on the characters without losing the spectacle you want in a big sci-fi adventure like this. For example, at one point, Paul is running across the sand as two ships crash and explode; the explosions happen in the background, with Paul still dominating the screen as he runs from danger. The effect is great, and there are other moments like that in the trailer. I can’t wait to see this movie.
