First Member of The Authority Cast for Superman: Legacy

The Authority is coming together. Deadline exclusively reports that James Gunn has cast María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica/the Engineer, a member of the Authority, in his upcoming DC movie Superman: Legacy. Deadline calls her “part of the villain team,” indicating that the Authority will be the antagonists of the film. De Faría has numerous credits but is still a relative unknown, with supporting roles in the TV show The Moodys and the movie The Exorcism of God being her biggest claims to fame. Written and directed by Gunn, Superman: Legacy is set to arrive in theaters on July 11, 2025, with David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.

Superman Engineer

I haven’t seen Gabriela de Faría in anything, so I don’t know what her acting talent is like, but she certainly looks the part. It’s exciting seeing the Authority coming to movie screens; I liked the first few runs of the comic a lot, and it never struck me as something that would be adapted. But I’m not crazy about them debuting in a Superman movie, or that they’re the villains. I’m not sure how that will work, unless they’re more ideological enemies for Superman than physical ones that he has to stop. I get the conflict, but how do you go from that to the Authority having their own movie? To be honest, I would prefer the Authority not be part of the DCU and just be their own thing, an off-shoot where they can explore the themes of the comic – and have some fun with the ultraviolence – without making them the bad guys in a more traditional superhero movie. But on an aesthetic level, the casting is great so far, and I’m looking forward to seeing how the rest of the team shapes up.
