Michael Waldron Will Write The Kang Dynasty

Once again, Marvel is keeping their creative choices in-house. Deadline exclusively reports that Michael Waldron has been chosen to write the script for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, the next Avengers movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Waldron previously wrote Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and was the head writer of the first season of Loki. He was also hired to write the following Avengers film, Avengers: Secret Wars. This news follows rumors that Marvel is pursuing Multiverse of Madness director Sam Raimi to helm the two upcoming Avengers movies after Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton departed The Kang Dynasty.

I thought they might do this when Raimi’s name was mentioned. Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have been two of Marvel’s few successes following Avengers: Endgame, so it’s not surprising they want to tag in the creatives behind those (aside from Sam Raimi being Sam Raimi). They’re also supposed to be trying to trim down their ridiculously huge budgets, and that’s hard to do on an Avengers movie. I doubt Sam Raimi comes cheap, but not only is Waldron relatively unknown, but according to Deadline, he has an overall deal with Marvel and 20th Television. I would guess Marvel can easily fold this job into that deal and save some money. As for what this means creatively, well… I don’t know. I didn’t dislike Multiverse of Madness the way most seem to have, but it definitely has problems. And I don’t like Loki at all. It also depends on the direction Marvel wants to go with these films; if the talk of them ditching Kang is true, The Kang Dynasty will be completely revamped (and have a new title), maybe into something more closely related to Secret Wars. Watching the next few years of the MCU take shape will be interesting, even if the movies aren’t.
