Rick and Morty Season 7 Gets a Release Date and Poster

Stock up on portal gun fluid because Rick and Morty are getting ready to travel across the multiverse again. Adult Swim has announced that season 7 of Rick and Morty, their hit sci-fi comedy series, will premiere on October 15, 2023, at 11:00 PM Eastern and will air for ten episodes. A press release from Adult Swim makes light of the absence of Justin Roiland, the co-creator of Rick and Morty and the voice of, among other characters, Rick and Morty. Roiland was fired when a former girlfriend accused him of abuse; the charges were dropped, but Roiland is still out at Adult Swim (and Hulu, and seemingly anywhere else he created lucrative content for people who will continue to make money off of him). A hit piece run in The Hollywood Reporter detailed other troubling accusations, all of which are old, the worst of which is unconfirmed, and none of which constitute removing him from the show he created. Adult Swim has said a new voice actor or actors will essentially be hired to do Justin Roiland impressions. Here’s the press release:

“Rick and Morty are back and sounding more like themselves than ever! It’s season seven, and the possibilities are endless: What’s up with Jerry? EVIL Summer?! And will they ever go back to the high school?! Maybe not! But let’s find out! There’s probably less piss than last season. ‘Rick and Morty,’ 100 years! Or at least until season 10!”

I love Rick and Morty (you can read about why in the following long-ass articles: 1, 2, 3), and I don’t like being nervous about a new season, but here we are. Aside from what happened to Justin Roiland putting a bad taste in my mouth, I’m not confident they’ll get someone who sounds enough like him to make sure Rick and Morty feel like Rick and Morty. They’re assuring everyone it will be seamless, but what else can they say? “Rick and Morty are back and sounding more like themselves than ever!” smacks of desperation, particularly since it’s impossible. And this season had a great setup, with Rick resolving to hunt down Rick Prime, the evil version of himself who killed his wife and daughter. And beyond that, there are still plenty of stories for this show to tell; Evil Morty is out there somewhere, and with the Central Finite Curve gone, an endless multiverse that is now much less manageable for Rick than it was threatens to engulf them. But even if it’s good, even if the new voice actor or actors can imitate Roiland perfectly, the knowledge that the man more responsible than even Dan Harmon for the show has been cut out of it will gnaw at the back of my mind, and I don’t think I’m alone.

I could care less at this point. Justin Roiland had it coming by being on the same side as the woke mob and honestly I consider it poetic justice he got kicked off his own work.

Great article again. I’m glad I can read your work and trust everything you write and is written with integrity.

    Thank you very much!

I have no doubt I’d hate Roiland in real life, and vice versa. And a lot of this is probably selfish because I love the show so much. But I don’t like people having the things they created taken away from them, especially over nonsense that ends up not being true, and I get angry at the sanctimony of the company who simply (back of hand on forehead) CANNOT do business with such a man anymore but has no problem making money off of his work.
