Trailer: Kung Fu Panda 4

Today, DreamWorks and Universal Studios released a trailer and poster for Kung Fu Panda 4. The third film in the popular animated comedy adventure series was supposed to be the final one, but much like with the Shrek franchise, DreamWorks has reneged on that assertion. Check out the trailer here:

And here’s the film’s first official poster:

I don’t know about this. I have no love for the third Kung Fu Panda movie, by far the weakest of the three so far. But it claimed to end the story, and I’m not confident Kung Fu Panda 4 will be any better. I’ve always liked Ian McShane’s villain from the first Kung Fu Panda, Tai Lung, but why bring him back? Isn’t that a little lazy? Chameleon (Viola Davis) absorbing the powers of Po’s other enemies seems cheap, and this concept has been done before. I don’t think movies always have to be original, but they’re going to have to sell this concept really well. The animation looks great, of course, and it’s wonderful to know that Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Bryan Cranston, etc., will return to voice their characters. I’m not assuming Kung Fu Panda 4 will be bad; right now, I just don’t see the need for it.
