DC Anime Suicide Squad ISEKAI Announced

After two failed live-action movies, Task Force X is going anime. DC has released a teaser – or an “announcement” – for Suicide Squad ISEKAI, an anime featuring the comic book black ops team made up of imprisoned supervillains. Suicide Squad ISEKAI will be a TV series produced by Warner Bros. Japan and animated by WIT Studio. Eric Osada will direct the series, with Tappei Nagatsuki and Eiji Umehara as the screenwriters and Kenichiro Suehiro as the composer. Naoto Hosoda will be the character designer, with Akira Amano, a manga artist, doing the original character drafts. There’s no release date set right now, but you can see the announcement teaser below:

Well, that’s certainly a thing that exists. I’m not an anime fan – I know a lot of people love it, but it just doesn’t work for me – so I’m not exactly on pins and needles for Suicide Squad ISEKAI. But there is some information out there to let people know what’s in store for them when the series debuts. The title translates to Suicide Squad Different World, and the anime will feature the DC characters transported to a fantasy realm where wackiness will likely ensue. (Apparently, isekai is an anime genre in itself.) The trailer certainly has that, with glimpses of floating islands, flying dragons, and a tribe of pig people. Harley Quinn and the Joker will be the main characters, with other Suicide Squad members in supporting roles, though which ones are unknown right now. While Suicide Squad ISEKAI isn’t my cup of coffee (I don’t like tea either), I will say that I love Harley Quinn’s design; unlike the movies and modern comics and animation, she looks close to her original design, which is meant to resemble a harlequin. That’s gotten lost over the years, and it’s a shame since it’s where her name comes from, but it’s good to see it pop up every once in a while.
