James Gunn Shares Superman: Legacy Cast Photo

You won’t have to look up in the sky to see Superman today; just check out Instagram. James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios and director of Superman: Legacy, posted a behind-the-scenes image on the social media site with most of the film’s major cast members, plus himself and fellow DC Studios head Peter Safran. This cast photo was taken after a table read, so one is in costume, and the actors just look like themselves, although Nicholas Hoult is bald in preparation for his turn as Superman’s arch-nemesis, Lex Luthor. There’s also an additional cast member that hadn’t been announced, at least not that I’d heard: Terence Rosemore as Otis, the Lex Luthor henchman portrayed by Ned Beatty in Richard Donner’s Superman. You can see the image below:

Gunn also posted an image a day ago featuring himself, wife, Jennifer Holland, and actor Freddie Stroma on the set of the film. Stroma was in a few Harry Potter movies, an episode of Game of Thrones, and Gunn’s HBO series Peacemaker. Gunn joked that neither Holland nor Stroma is in Superman: Legacy, in reference to people accusing him of nepotism (fairly or not). That picture is below:

These pictures are getting a lot of attention, but they don’t reveal much of anything; they’re just Gunn and crew having fun during pre-production. Terence Rosemore is a surprise, as is Otis’s inclusion in the film; I don’t recall seeing Rosemore in anything, although a look at his IMDb page reveals that he’s been in lots of movies, including some great ones (JFK, The Nice Guys, Heaven’s Prisoners), and – you won’t believe this – the last two Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Hoult is getting the most attention, with people marveling at how much he looks like Lex Luthor, which… I guess. I mean, he’s bald, so if that’s all that matters, sure, I suppose he does. When Gunn runs down the characters, I’m mostly reminded of how many superheroes he’s stuffing into Superman: Legacy. I’m willing to wait and see, but I’m not crazy about this right now; I’d rather see Superman get his own movie to start things off, not have to share the spotlight with Green Lantern, the Authority, and a bunch of D-listers. It feels like the same mistake the DCEU made, doing too much too fast instead of building their universe slowly, and even that let Man of Steel just be about Superman. But we’ll see; I hope it’s good, and I like a lot of the casting. But the real best part of the picture is that Nathan Fillion is front and center, just being the man.
