New Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F Trailer is Worrying

Beverly Hills is about to get another dose of Detroit justice because Netflix has released a new trailer for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. The fourth film in the Beverly Hills Cop series finds Axel Foley traveling back to Beverly Hills to help his daughter, teaming up with his old friends Billy Rosewood and John Taggart, and likely cracking jokes while shooting lots of bad guys. Eddie Murphy returns as Axel Foley, with Judge Reinhold and John Ashton as Rosewood and Taggert, Paul Reiser as Axel’s Detroit PD partner Jeffrey, and Bronson Pinchot as art dealer Serge. They’re joined by Taylour Paige, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Kevin Bacon, Mark Pellegrino, and Luis Guzmán. Directed by Mark Molloy, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F arrives on Netflix on July 3, 2024. You can see the new trailer below:

The previous trailer for Beverly Hills Cop 4 (Can I just call it that? Do we have to do this stupid “Axel F” stuff? They couldn’t even use his whole last name?) made me hopeful for the movie, but this one worries me. That sequence in the helicopter is corny, with the kind of lines designed for easy laughs that never actually get them. They’re the lines that describe the situation instead of making a joke, as though that in itself is funny. I’m also worried that the movie will mostly be Axel teamed up with Joseph Gordon-Levitt instead of Rosewood and Taggart, which is what we want to see. I know everyone is older now, but if you’re going to revive Beverly Hills Cop, you need to do it right. On the other hand, some of Axel’s lines did make me laugh (“Y’all are the LEGO cops!”), and it’s nice to see the classic characters together again. There’s definitely potential, and you’re crazy if you think I’m not watching this as soon as it goes live on Netflix, just in case it’s good, but I’m preparing myself for disappointment.

Oh, and we’re all assuming Kevin Bacon is the bad guy, right? Why else would he be in that role?
