RUMOR: 21 Jump Street Spin-Off with Brie Larson in Development

The 21 Jump Street movie series is getting a makeover. According to scooper extraordinaire Daniel Richtman (who posts behind a Patreon paywall, but World of Reel was the first to report it on a web page you can see for free), a 21 Jump Street spin-off movie is being developed with Brie Larson’s character, Molly Tracey, in the lead. Nothing else is known about the Sony film. This is the latest of several attempts to revitalize the movie series, the last entry of which was its second, 22 Jump Street. The films are based on a TV show of the same name, in which young-looking cops posed as high school students to catch drug dealers; the show was most notable for featuring a young Johnny Depp in one of the lead roles. The two previous movies starred Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as the cops, with Ice Cube as their commanding officer and Nick Offerman as the deputy chief of police.

I’ve only seen 21 Jump Street (the movie) once, and I’ve never seen 22 Jump Street, so I didn’t even remember Brie Larson was in the movie, let alone who she played. But it appears this spin-off has been in the works since 2015, with 22 Jump Street director Rodney Rothman returning to write and direct; at one point, Tiffany Hadish and Awkwafina were involved. I don’t know if any of them are going to be involved in this version, if the rumor is even true. Another Jump Street movie has been discussed for years, particularly after the massive box office success of the sequel; everyone’s favorite is probably the one that would have been a crossover with Men in Black, which sounds crazy but couldn’t have been any worse than Men in Black: International. As for this idea, I don’t have much of an opinion one way or the other. I remember liking 21 Jump Street, but not as much as most seemed to, and I never saw the sequel. I can’t stand her version of Carol Danvers, but I liked Larson fine in Fast X, although she was barely in it. An online perusal tells me she was Jonah Hill’s love interest in 21 Jump Street, but she wasn’t a cop; maybe she’s recruited into the program, although – and no, this isn’t a personal attack or something – Brie Larson doesn’t look like a high school student, even the Hollywood late-20s kind. But who knows? This could all be made-up nonsense.
