Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Trailer Summons Some Fun

The title only has it twice, but somebody must’ve said the B-word three times because the afterlife’s leading bio-exorcist is back. Today, Warner Bros. released a new trailer for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the sequel to Tim Burton’s classic horror comedy, Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice finds the Deetz family returning to Winter River, Connecticut, for the funeral of patriarch Charles, where they visit their old house and encounter the ghost with the most once again. Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara reprise their roles from Beetlejuice, and they’re joined by Jenna Ortega, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, and Willem Dafoe. Tim Burton returns to direct from a script by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, with Danny Elfman back to provide the score. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice rises from the model of a grave and haunts theaters on September 6, 2024, and you can see the new trailer below:

Of all the franchise revivals on the docket, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has the best chance of being good. It’s got all the right ingredients – Tim Burton, Danny Elfman, and the important players from the original cast are back, and the new additions feel like they belong in this world. And this trailer hits many of the right notes. There are callbacks to the original, like the model in the attic, the ghostly waiting room, the sandworms, and the guy with the tiny head. But there are some cool new ideas, too, like that subway station that becomes the setting of what looks like a song and dance number or Betelgeuse as a psychiatrist. And we can glean some plot details from the trailer as well, like Lydia warning her daughter about Betelgeuse and being ignored, to everyone’s peril. I’m also glad they’re admitting that Charles is the family member who died; we all knew it from the beginning, and it’s better not to insult the audience’s intelligence and pretend this is a mystery. I’m interested in seeing how Monica Bellucci and Willem Dafoe figure into the plot. (There is some information about them out there; I’m trying to be vague in case anyone reading this doesn’t know.) It’s hard to believe neither of them ever worked with Tim Burton before; they both fit his aesthetic so well, especially Dafoe. I’m also glad that it looks like Lydia is the main character, as opposed to her daughter; I like Jenna Ortega, but Lydia’s the one we want to catch up with, and it’ll be cool to see her at a new stage of her life. And it doesn’t look like Michael Keaton has missed a step in over thirty years, which is promising. Betelgeuse appears to be part of the afterlife’s bureaucracy now; I wonder if his evil plan this time is to escape it. There is a little more CGI in the trailer than I’d have liked, and that plane looks awful. But I’m excited to see Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, possibly to my detriment.
