Michael Mann Closes Deal for Ferrari Biopic with Hugh Jackman

Michael Mann is finally putting his foot on the gas. Deadline reports that the international rights to the Heat director’s long-gestating Enzo Ferrari biopic has been picked up by Amazon and STX Entertainment at the virtual Cannes Market. Titled Ferrari, the film – which is eying a spring 2021 production start – is set to take place during the pivotal summer of 1957, when Ferrari bet everything on a 1000-mile race across Italy, and is said to have a Godfather-like feel. Hugh Jackman is in negotiations to star in the title role, thus continuing his run of intriguing high-profile parts after his departure from Wolverine.

While Ferrari pretty much had me at Hugh Jackman ever since his involvement was first floated in the trades a few years ago, I’m thrilled that it’s finally coming together for Michael Mann. After the misfire that was Blackhat, I wondered what he’d be doing next; when he signed on to the TV show Tokyo Vice, I genuinely thought that was going to be it for the veteran filmmaker, as I didn’t see any studios taking a chance on him for another film. To have him finally get to make his dream project is fantastic and serves as a reminder of the importance of being tenacious in an industry that will all too often slam the door in your face, regardless of your past success. There may be a lot more work to be done, but it’s good to know the hurdle of distribution is out of the way. I can’t wait to see the finished product. Here’s hoping it’s worth the wait.

Even though it’s a Enzo Ferrari biopic, I hope we’ll get to see a lot of the Ferrari 315 S in action in the movie. That car is a goddamn beast and a beauty too!

Another Car biopic, I guess the Matt Damon and Christian Bale film help spark this one to get made.
