Patty Jenkins is Back on Rogue Squadron

Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins appeared on the Talking Pictures podcast to discuss her return to Rogue Squadron, the Star Wars movie based on the Nintendo 64 video game that was delayed and then removed from Disney’s release schedule. That’s right, you heard me; in light of Wonder Woman 3 getting scrapped at DC and Warner Bros., Jenkins is working on a new draft of Rogue Squadron for Lucasfilm. Check out excerpts from the conversation here, courtesy of Variety:

“When I left Star Wars to do Wonder Woman 3, and I started working on that, we talked about, ‘Well, maybe I’ll come back to Star Wars after Wonder Woman 3, so we started a deal for that to happen,” Jenkins said. “When Wonder Woman 3 then went away, Lucasfilm and I were like ‘Oh, we’ve got to finish this deal.’ We finished the deal right as the strike was beginning, so I now owe a draft of Star Wars. So we will see what happens there. Who knows.”

“They [Lucasfilm] have a hard job in front of them of, ‘What’s the first movie they’re going to do? They have other directors who have been working, but I am now back on doing Rogue Squadron. We’ll see what happens. We need to get it to where we’re both super happy with it.”

On contributing to Star Wars:

“The emotion of Star Wars and what it stands for is something so beautiful in this world…If i can do something beautiful and do something that serves that audience, I would love to do it.”

Well, I’m actually shocked. These Lucasfilm-announced projects have been delayed, canceled, retooled, and had their creative teams gutted. But this is the first I’ve heard of an axed director being re-hired. Maybe it really was just a scheduling conflict. Like most people, I loved Wonder Woman, but not its sequel. I have no idea what to expect from this film or Jenkins. I’m just very, very surprised it’s happening again.

But what do you think? Sound off in the comments!
