The Batman Gets New Bat and the Cat Trailer

Warner Bros. doesn’t want you to forget about its superhero slate going into the New Year, as the studio has released a new The Batman trailer, which it’s calling “The Bat and the Cat Trailer.” Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman finds Bruce Wayne in his second year as Batman tracking down the Riddler, a serial killer “who targets elite Gotham City citizens.” Robert Pattinson stars as Batman, with Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Colin Farrell as the Penguin, and Jeffrey Wright as not-yet-Commissioner Gordon. After a lockdown-induced production delay, The Batman will hit theaters on March 4, 2022. (Sidebar: this tickles me because, when I was a kid, I read a Batman comic where one of the Riddler’s riddles was, “What is a soldier’s least favorite day?” the answer being “March 4th.”) Check out the Bat and the Cat trailer below:

I think this has been the best trailer yet for The Batman. The emphasis on Batman and Catwoman works because, based on what we’ve seen so far, I find that more interesting than the Riddler plotline. I’m not big on them turning the Riddler into a serial killer modeled on Zodiac; it reeks of going out of their way to be edgy. I also don’t like the look of this movie at all. It feels like they’re going too far into the realm of realism, trying to out-Nolan Nolan. Batman’s suit is a rinky-dink kid’s costume (but is somehow impervious to point-blank automatic gunfire), Catwoman wears a ski mask that kind of looks like it forms cat ears because it’s too big for her, the Batmobile is just a car, the Riddler wears what looks like a garbage bag around his head. In the next iteration, Bruce Wayne will fight crime in a three-piece suit with a bat pin on the lapel. But I liked the flirtiness Batman/Catwoman interactions in the Bat and the Cat trailer. “I have a thing about strays” is a great line, and if this turns into a series, I’d like to see their relationship grow and take some turns throughout the films.

What did you think of the Bat and the Cat trailer? Are you looking forward to The Batman? Is the Batwing just going to be Bruce Wayne’s private jet? Let us know in the comments and stick around Geeks + Gamers for more movie news!

I love the trailer though I hope they won’t try to out-Nolan. Nolan’s trilogy are some of the greatest movies of all time, and I feel an enjoyable Batman comic-book movie should be more than enough to give us a great time. Trying to “recreate” or “be better” than a masterpiece… usually badly backfires.

I always fear Hollywood keeping up its tradition of learning the wrong lessons from success. Nolan’s movies weren’t great because they were dark, for example, they were great movies that happened to be dark (and not as dark as they’re made out to be; they’re actually quite hopeful, optimistic films that look fondly on humanity). With this one, I worry that they’re trying to push the realism too far. Nolan grounded his fantasies in reality, but he understood there was still a fantastical element to a superhero story that you can’t get rid of, and he toed the line just right.

Also, Riddler being a serial killer makes me worried as well. I like serial killing stories… but Riddler is not a serial killer! If they wanted a villain to be serial killer, they could have easily use Victor Zsasz for example. But if they are using Riddler I would rather have him at least somewhat resemble his comic book version and this one doesn’t seen similar in anything other than name.

Agreed. I’d rather have him construct these complex puzzles for Batman to solve rather than “Guess who I killed this time through a riddle.” He should be a higher-minded criminal than a serial killer.
