Downton Abbey: A New Era Trailer Invites You to France

Monday, November 15th, saw the release of the first trailer for Downton Abbey: A New Era. The first film came out in 2019 to enough success to push a sequel into production after the popular TV series ended in 2015. The franchise follows a family of English aristocrats navigating the ever-changing social, political, and economic world of the early 20th century. Most of the principal cast is returning to reprise their roles, including Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Dame Maggie Smith, and Elizabeth McGovern. The film is set to come out March 18th, 2022. Check out the new trailer below:

I remember talk of a sequel as soon as the first film was released, so this doesn’t come as any great shock. I like Downton Abbey and enjoyed the first movie well enough, but it’s never been the same since Matthew died in the season 3 finale. My other favorite characters, Mary, Lord Grantham, and Lady Violet, are still kicking, and that’s why I keep coming back.

I saw a small featurette indicating that the wedding in the trailer is for Tom. I’m fine with this; Sybil has been dead for years by now, and there’s no reason he shouldn’t re-marry. I’m not really excited per se because, honestly, I don’t remember his love interest from the first movie very well. I only saw it once in the theater, and I guess this is the perfect time to rewatch it. The introduction of Lady Violet’s new French villa will keep the film’s locations interesting. I’m going to see the new movie for the same reason other fans will: to see these actors in character again. Everything else is just gravy.

What do you think of the new trailer? Did you like the first Downton Abbey movie? Are you tired of the Crawleys yet? Let us know in the comments below!
