Lars Mikkelsen Will Reprise Grand Admiral Thrawn

It was announced at Star Wars Celebration that Lars Mikkelsen will play Grand Admiral Thrawn in Ahsoka. Mikkelsen voiced the legendary EU villain in Rebels and said “it’s wonderful” to reprise the role in live-action.

Yes! This is the kind of good news I want out of Celebration. I loved Mikkelsen’s detached, sterile delivery as Thrawn in Rebels. I’m 110% in favor of them keeping the same actors wherever possible. I know that sometimes recasting is a necessary evil, but I find it very distracting when the new actor doesn’t look or sound quite right. Luckily, Mikkelsen, who starred in The Witcher, among other things, has plenty of live-action experience. I assume Thrawn will be the big bad for this phase of Star Wars and in the eventual crossover movie Dave Filoni’s directing. Ahsoka even calls him “the heir to the Empire” in the trailer, an obvious nod to the original EU trilogy of books in which he starred. I can’t wait to see Thrawn in live-action.
