Strange World Trailer Reaction

Today saw the release of the first trailer for Disney’s next animated feature, Strange World. The film will release on November 23rd (exactly six years after Moana), and at least so far, it looks like it will have a theatrical run. Strange World tells the story of the Clades, a family of explorers who end up lost in a “treacherous land where fantastical creatures await.” So far, the only known cast members are Jake Gyllenhaal and Disney Animation staple Alan Tudyk. Strange World is the third consecutive original story from Disney Animation, following Raya and the Last Dragon and Encanto. Check out the trailer here:

This looks amazing. Visually it’s definitely up to Disney’s usual state-of-the-art standards. But more than that, I like the vibe and the creativity of the designs a lot. The title card reminded me of Indiana Jones, and the creatures and plants we see in the background are unique and inspired. I wish we knew more about the cast, but I like Gyllenhaal and Tudyk. I have a feeling I won’t like the girl with the undercut and the attitude, but I’ll give her a chance. I wrote off Luisa in Encanto, and she’s actually very likable. Disney has made a mess of Star Wars and some of their other properties, and I detest what they’re doing with all of Pixar’s original stories of late. Lightyear, an IP spin-off, is the only Pixar feature to see theaters since before the pandemic. But I always show up for Walt Disney Animation Studio, which I still see as the heart of the company and where their priorities should lie. I can’t wait to see this movie, and I hope it’s more like Encanto than Raya. The big Clade family is giving me that feeling.
