Andor Coming to Hulu, ABC And More

Disney+’s Andor has a talented cast, a devoted fanbase, and critical praise behind it; what it lacks is viewership numbers. It seems Disney is trying to change that by airing the show’s first two episodes, “Kassa” and “That Would be Me,” on various TV networks and streaming services. The episodes‘ availability coincides with the Thanksgiving holiday in the US, providing maximum opportunity for non-Disney+ subscribers to give it a go. Check out the special airing schedule here:

ABC: Wednesday, November 23, 9-10:30 pm ET/PT

FX: Thursday, November 24, 9-10:30 pm ET/PT

Freeform: Friday, November 25, 9-10:30 pm ET/PT

Hulu: Available from November 23 through December 7

On the topic of Andor, we also know that Lucasfilm used the Volume to create the show. The Volume is the soundstage used to film shows like The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Images of the “set” are projected onto the floor, walls, and ceiling to create the shows’ unique look. Check out a statement from VFX producer TJ Falls here:

“We melded a lot of technologies, really. There were a lot of sets that were practically built that we then augmented and extended upon and finding the best way to extend them, creatively shoot them to have the most fulfilling result, to our traditional all-CG approach for our spaceships and the way that we deal with things. And then still utilizing things like our StageCraft technology that [Industrial Light & Magic] uses. And for Andor, we didn’t use one of the standing StageCraft sets, but we still used the StageCraft technology.”

I’m not sure if airing Andor on cable will work, but it’s not a terrible idea. It’s not like it can make the situation worse, right? I find it terribly sad to think that people watched The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi but won’t give this a chance. It’s all on Disney and Lucasfilm, though; if those shows weren’t so disappointing, maybe more people would be tuning in to Andor. I’m not a Boba Fett fan, but Cassian Andor is easily my least favorite of the three characters. The fact that this show is good, let alone this good, is a source of perpetual amusement and bafflement to me. I don’t know how something this character-driven and serious would play to the general audience, but I hope at least Star Wars fans give it a chance.

Andor Hulu ABC

I’m surprised they used the Volume on Andor! This show was highly-publicized for its use of practical sets and effects, all of which I’ve enjoyed immensely. The Volume is just technology like anything else, and I don’t begrudge its use in something like The Mandalorian. The results speak for themselves; that show looks great. The limits of this tech were fully on display in Obi-Wan Kenobi, proving that capable, passionate artists are still needed regardless of how much money you have. I think this hybrid approach Falls talks about is good, and I’m loving Andor so far.
